MArkets - They are madness!

So it's Thursday and it's my local market in sunny Esquimalt B. C. My trusty wing man [AKA Jack] loads all we need into our truck to set up magbagsetc booth. Now you have to understand that there is a finally tuned process to get all your paraphenalia out of the truck and moved to your  "spot". The "rules " of market vending can vary but all require you drop your stuff and move your vehicle; usually several blocks away.

Then using your trusty blue trolley you move everything. A special shout out to the amazing volunteers at Esquimalt market, they are so helpful! Our trusty manager has marked all,our spots so we now have to move from the boulevard to the site.

The tent goes up first and it is important that all the stuff is clear so as not impede this. Tables next, and then table coverings. Decide which side for the long table and the racks. Now go......bags, vases, where are the hooks and the frame holders! Small wooden boxes on top of larger, set up the jewelry on the rack, oh and where do you want  those shelves again!

We have about 1 hour to get all of this accomplished and we work as a well tuned machine!
Each week is a slightly different set up which keeps it interesting. Deciding on which bag will be featured on Maggie, my outstanding model, is always a challenge - how will the colours combine, and what's new this week in bag patterns.

4:30 pm - all Is ready, and we are starting to greet customers! So the evening moves forward and it's great to meet news folks and share my creative process and products. It's wonderful to see old friends, customers and neighbors.

7:30- take down time it's lots faster than set up and we each have our jobs! I do vases and art pieces and my trusty wing man is in charge of bags. Sign comes down, tables , boxes, grid panels and lastly the tent. Now reverse the procedure and take it all back to the boulevard. Load up our trusty truck and head to the pub for a bite to eat and then home. Tired, but a sense of satisfaction at a job well done. And so, until the next one.......

Needle Felting Day

So I promised myself today to do something new. And I did. It has been a long time since I did any needle felting so I dragged out my machine and changed the needles.but then I did it all by hand using a hand needle felting tool and a large piece of foam. This gives a soft and ethereal look to the background.

So here is step 1 using a 10x10 piece of black felt I layered and needle felted wool roving. Some merino and some kid mohair,I also had added some swirls and a bit of silk roving for some sheen.

after I have added and felted several layers I add some of the charms I am using in this under the sea piece. Also many pearls and crystals add to the picture. Love lots of beads.

Next I add the embellished piece of silk fusion which was my inspiration for this shadow box. The fusion is hand sewn as are all the beads.

And finished. I should have taken  a photo before i put it in the frame but I got a bit excited and did the frame and then remembered the picture. anyway I am really pleased with the end result.
And I am set to do another but first I need to make dinner and pick up my delightful grandson from day care.

Spent several hours today uploading and setting up my store. I have added bags, pins, scarf rings, and vases. It is truly amazing what happens when one works with the tutorials provided. I have 2 new knitted bags to felt;
The pictures below show the bags before they are felted.
The red bag will be a small felted satchel bag lined with red or gold silk and will have no pocket.
The multi coloured bag is a "bubble" bag it will be lined with 2 pockets and has one strap that makes this a shoulder bag.
Both will have a magnetic closure and a fun complimentary button.
Come back tomorrow and I will have pictures of the next stage of the bag process.
Cheers

So setting up a website and including a store is not for the faint of heart. I am most grateful for my lovely daughter JRD who has been so patient and helpful in my process!!

Life is always busy and this weekend we are moving my mom who is going to be 90 into a new apartment! Makes me wonder if the stress of moving is close to the stress of navigating web set up!!! If so my stress meter is high which might explain how I have just locked my keys in my car😞 oh well home to get the 2nd set 😏

Web site store will be for tomorrow🌻

    Susan Romphf. fibre artist

I am a fibre artist and I work mainly with a process called silk fusion. I use this process to create fabric that I then incorporate into bags of all sizes and shapes. using cork leather fabric.

I also sculpt the fusion and create jewelry and other art pieces.

This blog is a place to talk about the markets and art shows I'm participating in, as well as some fun videos and photos on how this crazy process works, what moves and inspires me, and how I get there. Come along for the ride!
